Affective-cognitive integration is a crucial skill for human development and key enabler in counseling interactions. This paper proposes heuristically developed counseling techniques in light of theory related to emotions triggering events and the importance of affective-cognitive integration. It also explores how sharing, through language, enables an interaction between affect and cognition that assists the integration of both. Drawing from humanistic psychology approaches, I examine empathy and non-judgment as principles that enable the sharing of emotions and from this I propose that the specific counseling techniques described herein are consistent with emotions triggering events theory and humanistic psychology and are an evolution of the foundation work of Carkhuff and Egan.
