Quick Questions... Q. Why are we talking about personal development here? Shouldnt we be talking about professional development? I dont think that you can entirely separate the two. What you want in your personal life tends to drive what you want in your professional life. What I would find helpful in a discussion in this sort of forum is what might be creative ways of ensuring that what I do in each area helps the other. Q. Im not sure that I want people at work knowing about my personal life, so how do I get help with my personal development at work? I share your concern about how much others are going to know about my personal life at work. Id be a little cautious about saying too much too soon. I want to know that the risks are compared to the benefits. I believe that its important to feel comfortable about revealing our personal desires for development at work. However, just asking questions about why you are uncomfortable might be a good place to begin. Is it you or the workplace? If its the workplace then maybe the workplace effects your professional development as well. It would be worthwhile checking out. Also, if you feel uncomfortable, maybe there are ways in which your clients or customers feel uncomfortable as well. It would be worth investigating. Q. My personal development is important to me. How do I ensure that my work contributes to it when the company seems to have its own idea about what I should want and need? Do you already have a plan for your personal development? Do you know what goals would further your plan? I frequently spend time outlining what my vision for life is. Thats what drives me. I try to work out how I am going to achieve my goals. When my work seems to conflict with those goals, I spend time re-evaluating what I really want. I also let those conflicts challenge me into finding creative ways around the impasses. Because I know what I want, I know where the bargaining room is and where the lines are to be drawn. Its no good taking stands just to take a stand. Know which battles are worth fighting for. Q. Id like to talk to my boss about some of my concerns about where my life is heading. Im a little nervous about it though. How do I raise it without seeming like I think my boss should solve all of my personal problems? |
